Its praises sung in local folk songs, magewappa crafts started out as a sideline for local farmers. Then in 1602, the newly appointed lord encouraged poor samurai of the area to take up the craft as a means to supplement their income, thus giving birth to the magewappa style we know today.
The beautiful Akita cedar grain and cherry bark accents of magewappa are popular far and abroad. Accordingly, magewappa was designated as an Official Craftwork of Japan in 1980. Always looking to push the creative envelope, modern style coffee cups, beer mugs, and more are being crafted in addition to the traditional bento lunchboxes, trays, and tea containers.
